About the Department

Vision:

To create successive generations of students of English Studies who will be informed readers, creative writers, talented translators, nation builders and cosmopolitan global citizens.

The Department Of English have been started in the year 2008 - 2009. In the same year we have got the Affiliation for UG Course B.A English in 2008 - 2009. Later we have also got the Affiliation for UG Course M.A English in the year of 2011 - 2012. Then soon after we have starte Research course in English and got the year of provisional Affiliation in 2017 - 2018

The Department of English conducts Bridge Course for all the freshers at the beginning of the academic year. During the course of the year it offers many student-centred programmes like training in Communicative English and Soft Skills and training in public speech and dramatics. For the slow learners and backward students it imparts student-specific Remedial Coaching. The department uses many educational tools and technologies for the benefit of students. Computer Aided Language Learning (CALL) has become part of the learning/teaching process. Plans are afoot to establish a language laboratory. The department will take efforts to buy language teaching software to augment its collection in the coming years.

At the Postgraduate level, the department conducts periodic seminars and workshops and gives training in both teaching and research. Perhaps, it is the only department to incorporate the NET-English syllabus as an exclusive paper to the students. As a research department it offers advanced level research in English Studies. The department has plans to enhance the volumes available to students for research. Besides tapping the internet resources the department plans to make available many national and international journals for the earnest researchers.

The ten day programme that the department conducts at the end of each semester for NET/SLET aspirants will also continue as it benefits students not only from our college but also from other city colleges. The department will also explore the possibility of designing syllabus for other add-on courses to be conducted in the years to come. Currently, a diploma course in journalism is offered by the department for which there are takers from both inside and outside the college.

The department is also keen on promoting co-curricular activities. The National Theatres founded in 2011 has introduced the students to playacting and helped them learn the nuances of English language and the contemporary idiom of mono-acting, skit and dramatic sketch.
