About the Department
Tamil also spelt as ‘Tamizh’ is a Dravidian language spoken predominantly by Tamilians of Tamil Nadu and podicherry, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Mauritius etc. It has official status in the Indian states of Tamil nadu, Puducherryand Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Tamil is also an official and national language of Sri Lanka and one of the official languages of Singapore. Tamil is considered as one of the oldest language and Govt. of India has conferred ‘Classical’ status to the language.
Tamil is an ancient and dominant Language of South East Asia belonging to the primitive Dravidian family with Rich culture , History and Literature. The Government of India has officially recognized Tamil as a Classical Language. Tamil Department have got UG Course B.Lit year of Provisional Affiliation granted in 2005 - 2006 and PG Course M.A in 2015 - 2016 . The Department of Tamil in Modern College has been attracting thousands of students who opt Tamil as their First Language.
Apart from the large number of valuable collection of books in the Library, the department keeps 500 books under book bank scheme.

TAMIL ILAKKIYA MANDRAM
“தமிழ் இனி மெல்லச் சாகும்”, என்ற நிலை மாறி, “தமிழ் இனி வெல்லப் போகும்”, என்ற நிலையை உருவாக்குவதற்கான ஒரு சிறு முயற்சி தான், இந்த “தமிழ் மன்றம்”. தமிழனாய்ப் பிறந்த ஒவ்வொருவரும் தன் தாய்மொழியின் வேரறிய, நம் முன்னோர் வாழ்ந்த அடையாளங்களைத் தேடிச் செல்லும் ஓர் அற்புதப் பயணம். தமிழின் பாரம்பரியமும் தமிழரின் கலாச்சாரமும் மேலும் அறிவு சார்ந்த எண்ணங்களை மாணவர்களிடையே புதுப்பிக்கவும் ஊக்குவிக்கவும் தமிழ் மன்றம் வாய்ப்பை ஏற்படுத்தித் தருகிறது. “தமிழனாய் இருப்போம்! தமிழ்ப்பற்றை வளர்ப்போம்!”
